  • Composite veneers.

What are the different types of braces available to me?

  • There are now many different types on the market, each one having it’s pros and cons.
  • It is important to do your research and find the correct type to suit your needs.
  • There are basically 2 types: fixed and removable.
  • Some are most suited to severe cases and some to mild cases.
  • To help you we have provided some information on the most common types available.
  • These are the type of orthodontic appliance most people think of when braces are mentioned.
  • They use metal brackets and wires to straighten teeth.
  • If you have significant tooth movements required then they are a cost effective option and provide very accurate results.
  • Ceramic braces are the same as metal braces, except that they have tooth-coloured or clear brackets that help blend in to teeth.
  • Some also use tooth-coloured wires.

These are usually more costly than metal fixed braces but a good option if you want a more aesthetic result when significant tooth movement is required.

  • Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth so they are invisible from the outside.
  • They are difficult to place and adjust so they are not suited to all cases.
  • They are a more costly option.
  • Some patients may find them more uncomfortable on the tongue.
  • Invisalign consists of a series of custom-made, very thin mouth guard-like, clear plastic aligners.
  • The aligners are removable and are replaced every 1-2 weeks.
  • These are the most aesthetic option as they are nearly invisible.
  • They can be removed for eating and drinking unlike the other types of braces previously mentioned.
  • Easier to clean teeth and gums as they can be removed.
  • It is advised that they are not removed for long periods of time as you need to be wearing them for 22 hours per day for them to be effective.
  • Ideal if you want a discreet option.
